India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Smog Following Diwali

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves inhaling extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" range.

Alarming Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of Delhi registered an pollution measurement over 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended level recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1,800, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding safe levels.

Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the dangerous pollution that blankets the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

However recently, the current local leadership petitioned the highest court to propose a modification of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Legal Decision and Reality

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during limited periods throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable flouting of the designated hours across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Several recording stations throughout Delhi recorded pollution spiking around late evening to the most severe measurements seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Regional Consequences

The widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing worsening air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the festivities.

Persistent Environmental Issue

Alarmingly severe concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been found to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Diverse Contamination Contributors

The situation in the city is attributed to a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing dangerous haze that then gets trapped over the city as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various studies.

This pollution causes high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k early deaths each year in the city.
